Financial Times and Daily Star see circulation increase

The Financial Times was up 2.5% year on year in August and the Daily Star Sunday up more than 26% on 12 months ago, according to the August figures published by the Audit Bureau of Circulation.

The Mail on Sunday and The Observer also posted modest rises of less than 1%, while the biggest fallers included The People and the Sunday Sport – both down almost 14% year on year – and the Sunday Times, down 12% on August last year to 1,190,108 copies. The News of the World dropped more than 5%, while the overall total of average Sunday circulations fell by almost 4% to 12,791,032 copies.

Elsewhere, the Sun dropped more than 2% year on year to 3,158,045 and the Daily Mirror had an average circulation of 1,582,290, a drop of 4.85% year on year. The Independent and the Scotsman were down 5.89% and 6.99% year on year respectively.

The Evening Standard also continued its downward trend, dropping 11.38% year on year to 277,555 as the effect of London’s cluttered freesheet market gathered momentum. Associated Newspaper’s evening freesheet London Lite continues to gain ground on News International rival thelondonpaper, posting an average distribution of 406,298 to thelondonpaper’s 495,899.

The London edition of the Metro had an August distribution of 546,959, up 0.88% year on year, while business freesheet City AM posted a year on year improvement of 19.27%, distributing 81,687 copies. It was down almost 20,000 copies on the two months previous, which it attributes to a “summer break” strategy, printing fewer copies during the holiday period.
