Car industry body appoints new chief executive

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has appointed Paul Everitt as its new chief executive. He replaces Christopher Macgowan, who is leaving the body.

Everitt (pictured), who is director of civil air transport and communications at the Society of British Areospace Companies (SBAC), will take up his position on January 2.

He is a former head of policy and economics for the SMMT. He worked for the trade body for six years before leaving to join SBAC, which represents 2,600 companies in the air transport, aerospace defence and homeland security markets, in February 2005.

At SBAC, Everitt is responsible for environmental and safety issues as well as leading its media team and government relations programme.
