Independent Newspapers loses digital chief

Richard Withey, the global interactive media director at Independent Newspapers, is leaving the company after eight years to work as a consultant. It is understood to be seeking a replacement.

Withey, who leaves at the end of the year, joined the newspaper as managing director of Independent digital’s operations in 1999 and oversaw the revamp of independent.co.uk in 2001. He was promoted to the global role in 2002. He will continue to work with the newspaper brand on online projects.

He previously spent 12 years at News International in a variety of roles including director of new media. Bill Swanson, general manager of new ventures, will oversee Withey’s day-to-day duties on an interim basis.

His departure follows news that marketing and circulation director David Greene is leaving the company after ten years, as revealed on marketingweek.co.uk. Greene, who steps down in May, is understood to be setting up a consultancy working across marketing, promotions, distribution, sponsorship and events.
