Nielsen figures reveal eBays Christmas popularity

eBay has emerged as the most popular online retailer over the Christmas period, according to figures from Nielsen Online. The site was visited by an average of 15 million Britons in both November and December.

Amazon was the second most popular online retailer, with 14 million in November and 11.4 million visitors in December. Along with Play.com, the pure online retailers dominated the top five retailers.

Nielsen says that the online retail sector is still dominated by the pure online players. It adds: “However, the high street brands have really come on in leaps and bounds over the last year.”

Asda’s online presence saw the strongest audience growth in the top ten, with visits growing by 68% year-on-year, to 2.6 million in November and 1.6 million visits in December.

Argos’ website was the most popular out of the traditional retailers’ websites over Christmas, with November seeing 7 million visits and December seeing 5.3 million visitors.
