Corgi beats car industry with fuel cell powered toy

Corgi, the toy manufacturer, claims it has “beaten Detroit to the punch” by signing an agreement with a fuel cell manufacturer to develop a range of eco-friendly toy cars that run on water.

Corgi, the toy manufacturer, claims it has “beaten Detroit to the punch” by signing an agreement with a fuel cell manufacturer to develop a range of eco-friendly toy cars that run on water.

The company will unveil two state-of-the-art remote controlled cars at the Nuremberg toy fair next month, both using fuel cell technology and designed by concept car legend Luigi Colani, who has built concept vehicles for Corvette, BMW, Ferrari, Mercedes and Volvo.

The toy company claims that it is now ahead of the US car market in terms of bringing green technology to market.

The fuel cells extract hydrogen from water, by means of electrolysis, which is then used to power the vehicle. Fuel cell technology is regarded as the future of the motoring industry as it has minimal environmental impact.

The cars, both built to 1/16 design are radio and infrared controlled. Singapore-based company Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies has provided the fuel cells after signing an agreement with the toy manufacturer.

Corgi chief executive, Michael Cookson, says: “This agreement represents a new chapter for Corgi International and is clear evidence that, as a company, we are at the forefront in bringing new and cutting-edge environmentally-friendly and green technologies to the international toy market.”
