GMG Radio to launch two new rock stations

GMG Radio is planning to extend its Rock Radio brands with the launch of two new stations later this year. A digital-only station in the north-east will launch in April and will be followed by an FM station in Manchester in May.

The news of the digital-only station comes in the same week as GCap Media announced plans to scale back its digital interests because of slow consumer take-up. Rock Radio will launch onto the MXR digital multiplex.

Radio Rock, which launched in Glasgow last year, plays a range of rock music from bands such as Led Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy. GMG has yet to announce further details of programmes and presenters but it will include specialist programming with a “north east flavour”.

John Myers, chief executive of GMG Radio, says: “We’re looking forward to expanding the brand into the north-east where we’re sure there will be a very receptive audience.”
