Facebook launches music pages to rival MySpace

Facebook has launched pages for upcoming musicians and film makers. The social network’s move parallels that of rival MySpace.

Facebook’s sample music and film pages are now live. It is understood that the new pages will be showcased at the SXSW music conference in Austin, Texas, next week.

It is believed the music page will include a third party application from MusicToday that will enable musicians to sell their music through the site.
MySpace’s biggest strength has been its focus on music, and the new pages from Facebook appear to be a direct challenge to MySpace’s lead in this area. MySpace also provides niche pages for comedians and comic book artists, among others.

MySpace has recently looked to bolster its music offering by signing deals with four big music labels to found a new site, MySpace Music, which has been mooted as a competitor to Apple-owned iTunes.
