Times Media has signed up Nikon UK as the first major sponsor of The Times Young Photographer of the Year competition.
It is the first time an advertiser will be involved in developing a co-branded, cross-platform campaign for the event. In the past, it has worked with the Tabasco brand, but not as a key sponsor.
The Nikon deal will include editorial pieces in The Times newspaper, a microsite in the Times Online website and in-house ads in both print and online.
A 12-page supplement featuring the winning picture and runner-up entries, as well as interviews, will also be launched for the first time.
The tie-up has been brokered by Nikon’s media agency, MediaCom. The competition launches on March 20, with entrants requiredto make submissions by May 10 through the microsite. The prize is a six-month paid contract to work at The Times.
The winner of the competition last year was Susannah Ireland, a graduate of Norton College in Sheffield. Her photograph featured a flock of birds taking flight, with the London Eye forming the backdrop of the picture.
Previous winners have gone on to work as professional photographers with The Times, the Press Association, Angence France Presse and North News & Pictures.
