The Government is launching a responsible drinking push aimed at the over-50s. An outdoor campaign breaks in Manchester next month featuring the strapline, “Think you might be drinking too much?”

The new campaign, which is being spearheaded by the Manchester NHS Trust, is the latest in a Government’s overall health drive to warn people who drink more than the recommended limit of the dangers of drinking excessively.

According to Alcohol Concern, more than 1 million over-65-year-olds exceed recommended alcohol limits – a 75% rise in women and a 31% rise in men since the early nineties.

Earlier this year, the Government targeted women in their thirties and forties with an anti-drinking ad campaign featuring graphic warnings that their behaviour could lead to breast cancer or liver failure.

Ministers have approved the controversial move in a bid to try to persuade women, especially middle-aged wine drinkers, to cut down amid evidence that their excessive drinking is wrecking their health.
