Chief marketer quits enlarged Macmillan

Macmillan Cancer Support chief marketer Kate Shanley has resigned after just two months with the charity. It is not known if she has a job to go to.

Shanley joined the charity in March after Macmillian merged with Cancerbackup, where she was top marketer. She took over the new marketing role at the enlarged charity.

Macmillian is looking for a new marketing director to report to joint directors of external affairs Lynda Thomas and Hilary Cross.

Macmillan and Cancerbackup announced the merger in January this year. The charities claimed the effect would be to increase the information services available to cancer patients, their families and carers. Shanley had planned to implement a more “integrated” approach to marketing for the charity, with a specific interest in fundraising.

Before joining Cancerbackup, Shanley was head of individual giving at Help the Aged, where she worked on its “we will” rebranding exercise.

Macmillian is seeking brands to get involved with its World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. The charity has appointed partnership agency, Cocktail Marketing, to forge retail partnerships with high-profile high street retailers. The event is the third-largest fundraising event in the UK charity sector, after the BBC’s Children in Need and Comic Relief.

Macmillan develops and provides a range of medical, practical, emotional and financial services for cancer patients and their families. Prior to the merger, Cancerbackup was a specialist cancer information charity.
