Telegraph wins online battle with Guardian

Telegraph.co.uk has overtaken long-time market leader Guardian.co.uk for the first time in the latest month-on-month ABCe figures. The Telegraph Media Group website also saw the biggest increase year-on-year.

Telgraph.co.uk increased its number of unique users by 153% to 18.6 million in the year to April, while rising by 9.45% month-on-month. This puts it ahead of Guardian.co.uk, which rose 22.25% year-on-year to 18.5 million. However, the Guardian News & Media website managed to remain ahead of Telgraph.co.uk in the UK, attracting 7.76 million unique users, followed by Telegraph.co.uk with 6.3 million.

Mike Moore, general manager of digital TMG, says: “March was a great month for us and April has been even better, with [Telegraph.co.uk] growing both month on month and more than doubling our unique users from last year. The combination of strong editorial content, expert opinion, and our new digital strategy has resulted in record traffic.”

Meanwhile, Associated Newspapers’ Mail Online recorded a 93% increase year on year to 18 million. News International’s Times Online rose 73% to 15.4 million and The Sun rose 71% to 14 million.
