Stop wasting food, urges PM

Gordon Brown has called on British consumers to stop wasting food in a bid to fight the rise in living costs. He made the comments ahead on the G8 Summit in Japan.

His comments follow Government research that found the average UK household is throwing away £8 of leftovers every week and he has urged people to plan meals in advance and stop making unnecessary purchases.

The report, due published by the Cabinet Office later today (July 7), also found that 40% of food harvested in developing countries can be lost before it is eaten because of poor processing, storage and transport.

Brown, speaking to journalists on his way to Japan, is understood to believe that rich countries should take responsibility for food waste. His is calling for a “global plan” to tackle the issue and to increase food supply.

The issues of food, rising prices, global economy and climate change are expected to dominate this year’s G8 Summit.
