Asda credits strong value message for June sales surge

Asda claims its “strong value message” led to a surge in customers and increased sales in June. The UK was one of the key international markets for parent company Wal-Mart over the month.

The retail group announced that international sales were up 16.9% for the five weeks ending July 4. The UK, Brazil and China were its strongest markets.

Wal-Mart International vice chairman, Mike Duke, says the company’s low prices are the catalyst for its strong performance in international markets. The company also says video games and fresh foods contributed to its divisional performance.

Asda is increasing its presence in the gaming sector with a new in-store format it has developed with Nintendo (MW.co.uk June 26). It will include branded aisles and is being rolled out from this month. The retailer aims to convert 160 stores by the end of this year. The UK retailer will report its financial results for the quarter on August 14.
