More affluent shoppers go to Asda

Asda has seen a 6.5% increase in “affluent” shoppers over the past 12 weeks to June 15 compared to the same period last year. It is thought the growth can be attributed to the credit crunch.

The retailer says that 25% of its 7.5% growth, which it reported last week, is coming from AB shoppers. It adds that 2.5 million AB households shopped at the chain over the period.

Asda has seen sales of organic green tea, Fairtrade Latin American coffee, luxury pizzas and French red wines rocket over the period.

It says that it has seen an 11.2% increase in spend from the demographic, which it claims is nearly double the uplift seen at Lidl, Aldi and Netto combined.

Sales of organic green tea are up by 18%, Fairtrade coffee by 15.5% and a 17.3% rise in sales of luxury pizzas. Meanwhile, it has reported a 46.3% increase in French red wine sales despite a 0.9% fall across the market. The sales mean the supermarket chain takes an 8.6% share of all French wine sold in the UK.

Asda has also reported a 6.5% increase in sales of Puglian olive oil, 9.5% lift in ice cream foudu sets and a 9.5% rise in sales of luxury toilet paper.
