Blinkx launches TV search service

Blinkx, the video search engine, is launching a service that will allow people to search for full-length TV programmes online. Blinkx Remote goes live today (July 30).

The service will allow users to search content from BBC iPlayer, Channel 4’s 4oD, Channel 5, CBS, ITN and ITV. It will filter out spam, short-form and illegal content, so it can search for full TVprogrammes. The content is sorted on a geographical basis.

Once users locate the programme they want to watch online, they then leave the site and watch on the platform it is running on.

The Blinkx Remote service aims to act “as a mirror” to what is on the Web. For example, if programmes are taken off BBC iPlayer after seven days, that content drops off the index and cannot be found.

Blinkx says it is looking to expand the service accordingly as more quality online services launch.

Federico Grosso, senior vice president for business development at Blinkx, says that advertisers want to be “associated with professionally-produced content that can be identified.”

Blinkx was founded in 2004 by technology entrepreneur Suranga Chandratillake.
