Tories attack lads’ mags

Shadow education secretary Michael Gove is expected to slam men’s magazines, such as Nuts and Zoo, as irresponsible. The Conservative front bencher is due to make the remarks today at a speech organised by think tank IPPR.

It is understood Gove will link the magazines with the ills of family life today because of their hedonistic attitude. His speech on family, marriage and education, will also point to lads’ magazines as promoting a negative image of women.

“Titles such as Nuts and Zoo paint a picture of women as permanently, lasciviously, uncomplicatedly available. They celebrate thrill-seeking and instant gratification without ever allowing any thought of responsibility towards others,” Gove is expected to say in his speech.

He will discuss the Conservative’s commitment to putting in place measures to support issues around family and marriage, which includes parental input into schools.

Gove will also address the widening gap in education between the rich and the poor.
