The Sun and Daily Mail post circulation rise

The Sun and Daily Mail were the two big circulating dailies to enjoy month on month increases, according to the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations figures. In the case of the relaunched Sunday Sport, it finally enjoyed a reversal of fortunes.

News International title The Sun maintained its stranglehold as the biggest daily newspaper, with a 1.56% increase to 3.1 million in the six months to July. And while it suffered a month on month fall of 1.9% in June, in July it rose by 1.44%.

Associated Newspapers’ Daily Mail also bettered its negative month on month performance in June, to record a 1.77% increase in July. However, it fell 1.93% to 2.285 million year on year.

The Financial Times posted the biggest month on month fall among the dailies, dropping 4.98%. Year on year it also fell slightly by 0.47% to 445,473.

The Guardian saw a bigger fall than its June results, dropping 2.67% month on month and 4.11% year on year.

Among the Sundays, News of the World suffered a year on year fall of 3.12% to 3.196 million, but saw a slight increase month on month.

The result was finally more positive for Sport Media Group’s relaunched Sunday Sport, which had been posting declines during the year. It rose 3.79% month on month. And while it fell 13.97% year on year, it was at a lower rate than its six months to June performance. However, the Daily Sport continued to fall month on month, down by 3.74%.

The Independent on Sunday faired badly month on month, falling by 4.3%, and 7.16% year on year. The Observer also suffered falls both month on month by 2.15% and year on year down by 0.45% to 449,139.

The Mail on Sunday enjoyed a slight month on month rise, though it fell 2.54% year on year to 2.2 million. Express Newspapers’ Daily Star Sunday also performed well month on month, though it fell year on year.

Scotland on Sunday suffered the most, with a 10.3% drop month on month, while also dropping year on year. The Sunday Herald also had a double digital fall year on year, down 12.57%.
