Lastminute launches mobile dining service

Lastminute.com, the travel and leisure website, has launched a mobile restaurant booking service that will allow users to search and book venues on the go. Fonefood will be available in 12 countries, including the UK, from today (August 14).

Users can search nearby restaurants and then make a booking for free through a link on their mobile. They will then be sent a confirmation, which aims to reassure users making bookings abroad. The application uses Google maps to find the users’ location and is powered by online restaurant reservations service Livebookings Network.

Marko Balabanovic, head of innovation at Lastminute.com, says: “This is just the start of many mobile capabilities that we are developing at Lastminute.com this year.”

Livebookings chief operating officer David Norris says the company recognises that people “are taking the internet with them in their pocket and expect to be able to get online anytime”.

The service can find booking at over 6000 restaurants and is available in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland as well as the UK.
