Online Guardian tops table

Guardian.co.uk has maintained its lead among the newspaper websites for the second month in a row, while Telegraph.co.uk has recorded the biggest year-on-year growth, according to the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic figures for July.

Unique users to the Guardian News & Media’s Guardian.co.uk site rose 0.6% to 20.6 million, while among UK visitors it also maintained its lead with 8.475 million. Its consistent performance saw it win back the top spot from Associated Newspapers’ Mail Online which led the pack during the month of May.

Telegraph Media Group’s Telegraph.co.uk and Mail Online were neck and neck, with the former moving to 18.7 million, despite a 4.9% month on month fall. Mail Online on the other hand, grew 16.8% to 18.7 million.

The boost for the site has come following the announcement of the planned departure of Mail on Sunday and Mail Online managing director, Stephen Miron, who will leave to take up the position of chief executive at Global Group’s radio division.

In other ABCe results, Telegraph.co.uk was also second to Guardian.co.uk among UK users with 6.3 million. Times Online recorded 5.9 million, followed by Mail Online with 5.5 million.

Year on year Telegraph.co.uk continues to enjoy the biggest growth, up 108.46%. Sites which suffered month-on-month falls were The Independent, which was down 8.69% to 6.6 million and Mirror Group Digital which fell 4.59% to 5.2 million.
