BBC iPlayer marketer leaves for MCBD

David Bainbridge, BBC Future Media marketing director, is leaving the broadcaster to join Miles Calcraft Briginshaw Duffy in the new role of vice-chairman. Bainbridge, who oversaw the launch of the BBC iPlayer, has been with the corporation for two years.

The agency launched its search for a high profile vice-chairman earlier this summer (MW August 7). Bainbridge will work alongside MCBD chief executive Helen Calcraft, while the agency’s chairman Jeremy Miles is expected to return part-time following an illness.

Bainbridge joined the BBC as director of marketing, communications and audiences for the Future Media & Technology division reporting to Tim Davie, BBC director of marketing, communications and audiences, in 2006. Earlier this month, Davie moved to a new role heading the corporation’s radio operations (MW February 16, 2006).

Bainbridge was the first major appointment following Davie’s restructure of the BBC’s marketing, heading a new division bringing together its digital and new media marketing.

He started his career at BMP DDB Needham, now DDB London, before moving to Five in 1996 as part of the broadcaster’s launch team. He later became deputy marketing director before leaving to set up digital agency Whoosh.

As well as launching the on-demand catch-up service iPlayer, Bainbridge worked across the bbc.co.uk website, BBCi, Digital Access TV and other on-demand services.
