Lloyds TSB Group appoints non-executive director

Lloyds TSB Group, the UK bank that has just taken over HBOS, has appointed Carolyn McCall (pictured), chief executive of Guardian Media Group, as non-executive director. Her role covers both the group and Lloyds TSB Bank.

McCall, who will take on the role from October 1, will join the Lloyds TSB Group as it takes over HBOS, which owns the Halifax brand, to create the UK’s biggest financial services company. Lloyds moved to acquire HBOS earlier this week after it suffered a sustained fall in its share price leading to concerns about its future.

Sir Victor Blank, Lloyds TSB Group chairman, says: “[She] has an excellent track as a chief executive in the media industry and her expertise, knowledge and significant experience will be a great benefit to the group.”

McCall joined Guardian News & Media in 1986 and held a variety of positions until 2002 when she was made chief executive of GNM. She was appointed as chief executive of the Guardian Media Group in 2006.

McCall was forced to resign from the board of Tesco, where she was also a non-executive director, earlier this year after the retailer started proceedings against The Guardian over a story that alleged the company avoided paying tax by holding money in off-shore account. The newspaper printed an apology to the retailer on its front page last week.
