Capital scoops top breakfast radio spot

95.8 Capital FM breakfast’s Johnny Vaughan and Lisa Snowdon have scooped the number one spot at breakfast in London, according to quarter three Rajar listening figures. They pushed Magic 105.4 to second place.

The duo, who have been presenting together since July, had a weekly reach of 862,000 listeners in the 6-9am slot.

Capital’s rise to the top pushed Magic 105.4’s Neil Fox, who claimed the top spot last quarter, into third, registering a weekly reach of 732,000 listeners, down from 868,000 in the second quarter.

Heart 106.2 FM’s Jamie Theakston and Harriet Scott retained second place with 768,000 listeners, down from 844,000 last quarter.

Capital’s ascension to the number spot follows the official unveiling of Snowdon as Vaughan’s partner in August. Snowdon had been co-hosting with Vaughan since the beginning of July while Denise Van Outen had been on holiday.

The reunion of former Big Breakfast presenters Vaughan and Van Outen in February did not have the impact Capital would have hoped for. Quarter two Rajar figures saw the show register a 6.9% dip quarter on quarter.

Virgin Radio’s Christian O’Connell show dropped to 554,000 listeners across all platforms from 596,000 last quarter. Virgin rebranded to Absolute Radio last month following Radio Times of India’s £53.2 million acquisition earlier this year. It now run as a joint venture between TIML Golden Square and Absolute Radio.
