iPhoneApple has posted a 26% lift in profits to $1.14bn (£697m) in the quarter ending last month. The company also says that iPhone sales have for the first time out-stripped the market-leading Blackberry.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs has hailed the results as one of the best performing quarters posted by the company yet. Apple shipped more than 2.6 million Macintosh computers, almost 7 million iPhones and 11 million iPods.

“In terms of revenue, Apple has become the third largest mobile phone supplier in the world,’ Job says.

The iPhone is sold in 51 countries and is expected to be available in 70 by the end of the current quarter.

Since the iPhone went on sale Research In Motion (RIM) is estimated to have sold more than 23 million Blackberrys.

The strong result for Apple comes as Yahoo! announced job cuts of up to 1,500. It has reported a 64% fall in net income to $54m (£33m), despite a 1% rise in revenue.
