Newspaper sites see uplift

Newspaper websites benefitted from an uplift in traffic in October but Times Online saw the smallest percentage rise out of those publishers posting ABCe figures.

Websites saw numbers lift as readers turned online hungry for news on the economic situation and the US election and possibly details on the Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross furore at the BBC at the tail end of the month.

Times Online only registered a 0.74 per cent rise month on month to 20,474,001 unique users although it is up 64.56 per cent year-on-year.

Guardian.co.uk maintained its leading position with a 7.4 per cent rise to 25,976,046, up 41.1 per cent year-on-year. The site benefits from a large overseas audience accounting for more than 60 per cent of its total uniques.

The Telegraph Online ranks second but again only saw a 1.15 per cent uplift to 23,208,902 uniques. However, it is up an impressive 108.94 per cent year-on-year.

Mail Online comes in third 21,195,062 and is up a sizeable 18.32 per cent on September.

The Sun Online rose 8.52 per cent in October to 17,127,539 uniques and is up 86.29 per cent year-on-year. Responsibility for driving digital commercial growth for News International has just been handed to Katy Vanneck on an interim basis while Mike Anderson is away.

Mirror Group Digital posted a 10.89 per cent rise from a low base to 5,932,594; likewise The Independent jumped 5.16 per cent to 8,408,910 and is up 93.34 per cent year-on-year off a small base.
