Phones4U slashes prices in lead up to Xmas

phones4UPhones4U is taking on rival Carphone Warehouse by cutting prices on its prepay handsets in the run up to Christmas. It is also giving away fee gifts with some of its handsets.

The retailer has slashed the prices on some of its phones by up to £70, putting many of its pay-as-you-go deals in line with Carphone Warehouse, which also reduced its prices recently. The move also puts Phones4U in a head-to-head battle against low cost non-specialists such as Asda, Tesco and Argos.

Its biggest price cut is on the LG Viewty, which has been reduced from £199 to £129.99. Many other handsets have been cut by smaller amounts, including the Nokia 6300, which has dropped from £79.95 to £59.95.

Phones4U recently came under fire for breaching consumer protection laws, following an investigation by regulator Ofcom. The investigation found it had omitted details about mobile phone plans and network coverage to customers, and had “unfair terms” in its handset policy. It has now put forward legally binding standards to Ofcom.
