The Sun sees dramatic circulation drop

The Suns circulation has taken another tumble to dip below the 3 million mark yet again, down 6.09 per cent in February on the previous month, according to the latest ABC figures.

The Sun’s circulation has taken another tumble to dip below the 3 million mark yet again, down 6.09 per cent in February on the previous month, according to the latest ABC figures.

The News International title posted an average net circulation of 2,954, 298. It also fell below 3 million in December. Rival the Daily Mirror fell 2.95 per cent to 1,326, 628 and overall the popular newspaper sector dropped 3.99 per cent on January.

All national morning quality newspapers have seen circulation falls. The troubled Independent saw average net circulation drop 4.43 per cent month on month to 205,964 and fell 14.51 per cent for the six months to February 22, compared to last year. The newspaper is still trying to shore up circulation with promotions and is giving away the debut CD by the band The Mongrels tomorrow (March 7).

The Times, which relaunched its Saturday edition on January 24, saw circulation drop 1.57 per cent to 607,775.

The Guardian, which like The Times raised its price to 90 pence in January, posted a 5.18 per cent fall in circulation to 340,238. compared to last year. The Daily Telegraph fell 2.49 per cent to 821,943.

The Financial Times has also continued to drop, despite economic and financial news dominating the news agenda. It fell 2.75 per cent to 421,026.

In the mid-market the Daily Mail dropped 0.46 per cent to 2,218,547 and the Express fell 2.86 per cent to 735,498.

The Sunday publications fared slightly better with a 0.39 per cent rise for the Independent on Sunday to 179,487. The Observer jumped 0.58 per cent to 430,341 and The Sunday Times rose 1.27 per cent to 1,214,254. The Sunday Telegraph dropped 3.91 per cent to 595,029.

The Evening Standard, which last week saw Geordie Grieg take up the editor’s chair under new owner Alexander Lebedev, saw its circulation plummet 5.27 per cent in February to 277,552. Of this number nearly half, 132,682, were “bulks”.
