Coke reveals brands carbon footprints

Coca-Cola has announced details of the carbon footprint of three of its biggest brands, Coca-Cola, Diet Coke and Coke Zero.

The drinks giant says that a 330ml can of ‘Coca-Cola’ sold in Great Britain has a carbon footprint of 170 grams while the same sized can of ‘Diet Coke’ or ‘Coke Zero’ has a footprint of 150 grams.

Coke claims this is the first time the first time carbon footprint of any brand of carbonated drinks has been certified by the Carbon Trust. It used the Carbon Trust
“PAS 2050” methodology to calculate the product-level carbon footprints.

The research also finds that packaging accounts for the largest portion of the drinks’ carbon footprint, between 30 – 70%, depending on the type of container used.

Coke recently premiered two online films for online forum which aim to push its approach to packaging and recycling.

In December, it launched a campaign to encourage recycling of plastic bottles that included a contribution from Blur band member Alex James.

Sanjay Guha, president of Coca-Cola Great Britain and Ireland, says it is “absolutely committed” to reducing the environmental impact of its products.
