Google is to axe nearly 200 marketing and sales jobs globally in its second wave of job cuts this year.
The company says that the cuts are designed to improve its “effectiveness and efficiency as a business”. It is not clear which of its global locations will be affected.
Omid Kordestani, senior VP of global sales and business development at Google, says the growth the company has experienced has led to “overlapping organisations” that duplicate efforts and “complicate the decision making process.
“When companies grow that quickly it’s almost impossible to get everything right and we certainly didn’t,” he says.
He adds that the company “over-invested” in some areas in preparation for the growth levels it was experiencing at the time.
In January, the search giant announced it was to cut 100 jobs relating to its recruitment process as it wrestles with the downturn in the global economy . The cuts came two months after it reduced the number of contractors working for the company.
The company says staff affected by the latest cuts will be given time to find other jobs and severances packages will be paid to those who leave.
