Ralph Bernard to head up Royal Albert Hall
Ralph Bernard, former chief executive of GCap Media, has been appointed chief executive of the Royal Albert hall.
He replaces David Elliott who retires at the end of May after eleven years in the post.
Bernard (pictured) has been heavily involved in UK commercial radio in the past 25 years and was responsible for the creation of Classic FM. He was chief executive of the GWR Group from 1982 and became chairman in 2001.
GWR merged with Capital Radio to form GCap Media in 2005 and Bernard served as the chairman and then chief executive until he stepped down last year following the acquisition by Global Radio.
He is chairman of the UK’s only national commercial digital carrier, Digital One.
He takes up the position at the Royal Albert Hal, a registered charity, on June 1 this year.
Bernard says: “I am enormously excited to be joining one of the world’s leading entertainment venues. The Hall has made significant strides in its programming content over the past 10 years and I am determined to ensure that it continues to play a central role in our cultural life.”
