Natmags considers charging for specialist content

The National Magazine Company, publisher of websites including and Getlippy, is examining a move towards a paid-for model online.

MD Jessica Burley said the company, which attracts more than 7m unique users each month to its portfolio of sites, is looking at the possibility of charging for specialist content.

“This would consist of unique material not available in either our magazines or websites, which we believe would be highly attractive to our consumers,” said Burley.

Natmags is the latest publisher to wade into the debate and follows comments earlier this week from News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch that the publisher could move to adopt payment models within a year.

Murdoch said on Wednesday that online readers of News Corp’s newspaper sites, The Times, News of the World and The Sun, could soon be paying for accessing content.

This week Guardian Media Group’s CEO Carolyn McCall said the publisher is considering charging for access to specialist parts of the site, such as Media Guardian.

Other publishers, such as Bauer and Independent News & Media, have also said they’re investigating the model to help restore flagging revenues.
