Online sales up 14% on last year

Online retail sales grew 14% over the last year, according to the IMRG Capgemini E-retail Sales Index.

The report found that, despite the recession, UK online shoppers had spent an average of £10 more per visit in April 2009 than this time a year ago. The average online shopping basket value increased from £121.69 in April 2008 to £131.76 in April 2009.

Although retail sales have grown annually, the report showed a slight decline of 2% between March and April 2009. Furthermore, while the Beers, Wines & Spirit sector showed the strongest monthly growth in April (10%), there were declines in Gifts (-51%) and Clothing, Footwear & Accessories (-2%).

Mike Petevinos, head of consulting for retail at Capgemini UK, said the results were positive but that we shouldn’t expect the huge growth rates seen in previous years. “It’s clear the online market is maturing, with seasonal fluctuations becoming more noticeable in certain sectors as they’re no longer obscured by the 50%-plus annual growth rates of the past,” he said.

Tina Spooner, director of information at IMRG, said, “Internet shopping is clearly the bright spot in the UK retail sector but this industry is still young and has great potential for further growth.”
