back on top as most visited publisher site has regained its place as the most visited national newspaper website with 27,324,309 unique visitors in April.

The figure is up 2.59% on March and 47.33% year-on-year.

Recent months have seen the newspaper website top slot taken by The Sun online and then The Telegraph online.

Both these sites have seen traffic fall month on month for April with The Sun down 3.21% to 20,567,178 unique users and the Telegraph down a sizeable 13.83% to 23,875,251 users. However, the sites are up year-on-year with The Sun jumping 46.19% and The Telegraph rising 28.04%.

The Telegraph was the second most visited site in April and Mail Online was third, down 2.59% to 23,153,003 users.

Mirror Group Digital saw a jump of 20.44% to 8,596,963 users and The Independent’s digital offering saw traffic rise 3.97% to 10,432,660 unique visitors.

The battle for online users is taking place against a debate within traditional publishers over whether they can charge of online content and if so, which elements of their offering.

Rupert Murdoch of News Corp has indicated he wants his News International newspapers to experiment with some form of charging model later this year.
