O2 to become exclusive distributor of Palm Pre smartphone

O2 is expected to sign a deal with Palm to become the exclusive UK distributor of the Palm Pre, the PDA specialist’s new rival to Apple’s iPhone, according to reports.

The mobile phone operator is believed to have beaten off competition Vodafone and Orange to stock the web-enabled smartphone, which has a multi-touch screen and a sliding keyboard.

The device will be available in the UK before Christmas.

The Palm Pre will be available on 6 June in the US from $199 (£126) on mobile network Sprint.
