Consumers vote M&S ‘most trusted company’

Marks & Spencer is the most reputable company among British consumers according to a study of the top 140 listed companies.

Despite the high street retailers’ announcement last month that annual profits dropped 37.5% in the year to March, it was voted number one by a panel of over 5,000 British consumers.

The annual Global Reputation Pulse Study from the Reputation Institute found medical equipment manufacturer Smith & Nephew and Cadbury as the second and third most trusted brands by shoppers. Supermarket chain Morrisons came in fourth place, followed by Sainsbury’s in seventh, while rival Tesco lagged behind in position 22.

Companies are ranked on criteria based around trust, esteem, admiration and “good feelings”.

M&S also won the categories of providing an appealing workplace, being responsibly run and supporting good causes and the environment.
