He replaces Colin Bradshaw, who left at the end of last year to take on the position of managing director of data at DM agency Rapp.
Jones will oversee a team of 21 and will report to Royal Mail media director Mark Thomson. He will oversee the postal service’s data assets and direct marketing services.
He has had 25 years’ experience in the data industry, including previous roles at data and analystic company D&B, Abacus and Acxiom.
Thomson says the appointment is a signal of its “intent in both the data space and in broadening its offer to marketers.”
He adds that its data team is “integral” to allow customers “to know, target and reach their audiences in the right way and at the right time.”
Tony Lamb, former head of technical development at Wegener DM and DMA Data Council chairman, was last year appointed as Royal Mail’s head of data development. He now reports to Jones.
The appointment comes in the week the Government confirmed it still intends to sell a stake in Royal Mail. CVC Capital Partners, the private equity group, has emerged as the frontrunner to take a 30% stake. Dutch postal group TNT has been named as the other key bidder.
