Rivals hit out at EDF “greenwash”

Rival energy suppliers have hit out at EDF Energy’s ‘Green Britain Day’ with one launching legal action over the initiative’s green union jack logo.

Green Britain Day

The electricity firm, the official sustainability partner of London 2012 Olympic Games, has named today (July 10) the day that Britons should do something ‘green for the team’.

However, its use of a green union jack has incurred the wrath of rival Ecotricity which is taking the matter to court for allegedly stealing its own green union jack logo.

According to reports, Dale Vince, chief executive of Ecotricity, says EDF’s initiative should be renamed “Greenwash Day”.

Meanwhile, NPower will today launch a campaign for its Climate Corps educational programme with the strapline ‘Every day’s a green day for Climate Cops’ while yesterday British Gas ran press ads claiming that it “is thinking about new ways to be green every single day.’

The initiative aims to get more people involved in tackling climate change. EDF has partnered with radio group Global Radio to create a number of sustainability-themed events today, which will conclude with a concert at the Eden Project in support of Prince Charles’ Rainforest Project, and featuring Paul Weller.
