Rowe joined in December from the RBS Group where she was chief executive of European consumer finance.

Prior to RBS, she was managing director of retail at NatWest. She joined RBS Group in November 2001 from GE in the US as brand director for RBS’ NatWest bank.

Her departure comes as Tesco plots to expand its financial services offering and reach with many observers believing it can it can benefit from the financial crisis as consumers look outside the traditional financial services operators for a bank they can trust.

It has plans to expand into new markets as well as widening its product portfolio and opening more in-supermarket branches.

Last year, the supermarket acquired RBS’ 50% stake in the bank following the appointment of Benny Higgins as chief executive.
