England 2018 seeks sponsors

England 2018, the team leading England’s bid to host the FIFA World Cup in nine years time, is looking for a major sponsor to help finance the push.

Beckham and Rooney

The bid was officially launched in May with a presentation at Wembley Stadium featuring footballers David Beckham and Wayne Rooney and Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

This followed the appointment of Wembley’s commercial director Jonathan Gregory as director of partnerships for the bid in May.

Gregory is charged with securing sponsorship deals to back the bid.

A spokesman for England 2018 says it is talking with a “number of potential partners”.

“This is a rare opportunity for commercial organisations to show customers and staff that they are playing a part in bringing the world’s biggest tournament, the FIFA World Cup, to England”, he says.

Earlier this year, former Manchester United commercial director, Andy Anson was named chief executive of the bid. Anson moved from men’s professional tennis body ATP where he was also chief executive.
