Skype creates new role to drive EMEA growth

Skype has appointed former O2 marketing director Russ Shaw into the new role of general manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

He has been brought in to grow the eBay-owned company’s business in the region, including its mobile offering. He will commence in his new position on 1 September.

Russ joins Skype following three years with Telefonica where he held a number of senior executive positions.

He most recently he held the role of global innovation director for the Telefonica Group.

Prior to this, Shaw was at Telefonica’s O2 business, first as UK marketing director where he negotiated the sponsorship deal to create The O2 music venue in London; then as innovation director for O2’s UK operations.

His other previous roles include stints as chief executive of Mobileway, a venture-capital backed start-up focused on mobile messaging; and managing director of UK cable company NTL (now Virgin Media).
