News International is bidding to boost sales of its UK national newspapers with the creation of a head of retail strategy role.

Senior retail trade marketing manager Katharine Challinor has been promoted to the post, where she will be expected to work with retailers of The Times, The Sunday Times, The Sun and News of The World to lift sales.

All titles saw year on year circulation declines in the six months to June apart from The Sunday Times.

The media owner says working with independent retailers to build home delivery of their titles will be Challinor’s key strategic focus. She will also look at other ways to reach customers before they get to free newspaper distribution points.

The change follows the elevation of Sun editor Rebekah Wade to the new post of News International chief executive. Wade takes up the role at the start of September after a six year stint at the helm of the tabloid newspaper.
