Mayhead will sit on the broadcast and non-broadcast Councils, the bodies responsible for adjudicating on advertising complaints.

He is also currently chair of the Government Strategic Marketing Advisory Board, which is responsible for the oversight of all Government marketing activity, and non-executive chairman of the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Mayhead has also been a member of the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers (ISBA) executive committee, chairman of The Marketing Society and the director of the Centre for Marketing at the London Business School.

Prior to Argos, he also held senior marketing roles at both Cadbury and Schweppes.

He will take up his role from August 1, replacing Susan Murray who has served on the ASA Council for the maximum six year term.

Lord Smith, ASA chairman, says Mayhead’s knowledge “is second to none”, adding that this makes him “an ideal candidate to provide an expert view from a marketer’s perspective”.
