Spotify launches video ad format

Sony Pictures has become the first advertiser to feature on music streaming service Spotify’s new video ad format.

The Spotify video player has launched today (July 31) promoting Sony Pictures’ latest cinema release, crime thriller The Taking of Pelham 123, starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta.

The borderless Flash video player – which for this campaign will run the movie trailer – runs inside the Spotify application and allows the user to pause, play, rewind and adjust the player volume.

A separate audio message will announce the movie’s release date and drive users to click on the campaign banner to view the trailer.

Zia George, account director at Spotify, says: “As Spotify continues to evolve, our aim is to offer brands high quality and engaging advertising which avoids hampering our users’ experience – as well as enhancing it.

She adds that the video player has the potential to be used as a platform for branded content.

Earlier this month, Spotify rolled out a new a display ad format in the form of full-screen billboard ads as apart of a 3 Mobile campaign
