Clothing helps retail sales jump 3.3% in July

Retail sales rose 3.3% in July, the highest rise since May last year, driven by clothing and non-store sales, according to retail sales figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

Sales of clothing and footwear sales saw the strongest growth with clothing performing particularly well, increasing 10.3% year on year, while non-store retail, which includes online and mail order sales, rose 12.9% year on year, continuing its strong performance.

Food store sales increased 2% year on year, and enjoyed the strongest growth since 2007 in the three months to July growing 1.4% across the period.

Homeware stores continued to struggle, dropping 1.3% year on year, and falling 5.5% in the three months to July.

Total sales over the three months to July were up 1.6%.
