Adlington (pictured), who won two gold medals at the Beijing Olympics and two bronze medals at the recent FINA World Championships in Rome, will act as an ambassador for British Gas and will be at the “forefront” of the energy supplier’s sponsorship.

As part of the four-year deal, Adlington will continue to appear in British Gas advertising and as one of the faces of its ‘Your World’ campaign.

British Gas signed a six-year £15m sponsorship deal with British Swimming in March.

The company says it is to invest in the grassroots of the sport including community projects aimed at stopping the closure of local pools and schemes such as ‘Learn to Swim’ and ‘Swimfit’, which aim to increase kid’s participation in swimming.

Another aspect of the sponsorship, the ‘Pools 4 Schools’ scheme to bring temporary pools to “areas of aquatic deprivation” will be fronted by Adlington.

The swimmer, who became the first British woman to win an Olympic swimming gold since 1960 in Beijing, was named one of the faces of swimwear brand Speedo in January.
