Fujitsu to cut 1,200 UK jobs

Fujitsu has become the latest victim of the economic downturn, announcing plans to cut up to 1,200 jobs in its IT services operations in the UK.

It comes as the company revealed that it is likely to report “lower than anticipated revenues”.

The cuts are expected to be complete by the end of the year. It is not clear at this stage how the commercial and marketing departments will be affected.

Fujitsu currently employs 12,500 people in the UK. It is an IT systems, services and products company with an annual revenue of £2bn.

To date, cost cutting measures the company has undertaken includes a company wide pay freeze, a reduction in the number of contractors and temporary workers, a re-training programme and tight control of recruitment.

Additionally, strict controls have been applied to operational and capital expenditure.

In a statement Fujitsu says: “Action is necessary to ensure that the company remains competitive in the current difficult global economic climate and is in a solid position for future growth when the economy starts to recover.”

A Fujitsu spokesman says it cannot confirm which departments the job cuts are likely to come from.
