Google drafts first UK marketing director

Google has appointed eBay marketer Torsten Schuppe to the new role of marketing director, UK and Ireland.

He will commence in his new position at the end of November. His responsibilities spans marketing of the search business, Apps, Chrome and other Google products.

Torsten joins from online auction company eBay where he began in February 2006 as head of internet marketing with a focus on new user acquisition.

He was promoted to UK marketing director in 2008. He then moved on to head up a new regional team as European marketing director, based in Zurich.

Prior to eBay, Schuppe spent nine years at Bertelsmann, a German media group, in different roles across Europe in TV, business development, direct marketing and eCommerce

Meanwhile, Google has announced plans to serve richer ads on smartphones.

Advertisers will now be able to run bigger, more dynamic Google ads to users of high-end smartphones equipped with HTML-capable browsers. The capability will be available on the iPhone, Palm Pre and Android-based phones.
