Independent targets SMEs with supplement

The Independent is launching a new monthly supplement aimed at the small and medium size business sector as it believes more attention should be paid to these companies.

The supplement has the title Independent Business Extra and debuts tomorrow (12 October). It has been developed with the help of The Independent’s joint venture partner Culturemap.

Managing director of The Independent Simon Kelner says: “The Independent has its roots in the entrepreneurial spirit of Britain and we believe that SMEs too embody that spirit. To this end, we are devoting more resource into covering the sector and the topics that interest those who work in it.”

Simon Cooke, display advertising director adds that the supplement was called Independent Business Extra as research showed that SMEs resented being called “small businesses”.

The website version will be supplemented online with video material and there will also be a regular newspaper column aimed at SMEs.

The immediate threat of closure or sell off by Independent News & Media for the newspaper titles seems to have receded after recent boardroom disputes.

The publisher appointed Simon Davies as commercial director last month after the departure of Daryl Fielding.
