EBay appoints top European marketer

EBay, the online auction company, has promoted Alex von Schirmeister to the role of European marketing director.

Currently head of eBay in France, he replaces Torsten Schuppe who is leaving the company to join Google to become its first dedicated marketing director for the UK and Ireland.

Von Schirmeister will be based in Zurich, Switzerland and will transition into the role between now and the end of the year.

He will report to Wendy Jones, eBay vice president marketing, operations and advertising.

Von Schirmeister first joined eBay in 2004 as marketing director for eBay in France, before moving up to the role of country head in 2007.

Prior to eBay, he worked for Telefonica Moviles in Madrid. In 2000, he co-founded a start-up company in the mobile commerce sector in the UK, after having spent two years at Booz & Co.

Torsten first joined eBay in February 2006 as head of internet marketing. He was promoted to UK marketing director in 2008 and then moved on to head up a new regional team as European marketing director.
