B&Q helps customers go green

B&Q is introducing “eco-advisors” in its stores and paying the VAT on energy saving products in a bid to help customers be greener at home.


The DIY retailer is introducing a number of initiatives designed to encourage customers to carry out green home renovations.

B&Q will pay customers’ VAT on selected green products such as loft insulation and energy saving light bulbs as part of a four-day sales-promotion event from 23 October to 26 October, which will save customers 15% when they buy environmental products.

Environmental advisors will be employed at all its stores from January to give customers tips on easy and affordable ways to make their homes more energy efficient.

B&Q is opening two “eco-shop-in-shop” concepts this year, dedicated to selling environmental products, with more planned for next year.

The retailer plans to reveal a new eco brand in March next year, to help customers identify environmental products more easily.

The retailer is in talks with commercial partners to extend its eco-credentials by offering eco-home audits, installation services, and finance packages for green home renovations.

B&Q signed up to the 10:10 climate change campaign and pledged to reduce its carbon emissions by 10% in 2010.

In September, the Kingfisher owned chain launched its Autumn Privilege Card, as part of a £25m investment in pricing campaigns.
