Times Online losing web traffic in latest ABCes

Guardian.co.uk has regained the lead as the most visited website while traffic to Times Online is slipping month on month and year on year, latest ABCe results show.

The Times’ web performance provides a challenge to News International’s plans to start charging for some of its online content. Speculation suggestions the publisher plans to introduce charges shortly, possibly this year.

Times Online saw a drop of 1.26% in total unique users compared with August to 18,502,839 and traffic dropped 8.95% year on year. Stablemate The Sun Online also dropped 3.4% month on month but was up 45.69% year on year.

Guardian.co.uk overtook Mail Online for the top slot in September with 32,953,433 total unique users for the month, up 23.62% and the figure may reflect coverage of the party conference season. The eebsite had the highest traffic from UK users as well, at 11,882, 653.

The Mail Online saw a 4.74% jump in users month on month to 30.042, 463 but came in third and it will be interesting to see how the traffic figures reflect the furore over Jan Moir’s recent column regarding Stephen Gately next month.

Telegraph Media Group’s Telegraph.co.uk rose to second place with traffic up 24.83% for September to 31,016,789.

The Independent Online rose 9.17% to 8,787,141

Mirror Group Digital dropped 1.22% month on month to 8,930,691 users and the site is up 69.79% year on year.
